The synergistic action of organic acids and essential oils in animal nutrition – NBG EnteroBasic

EnteroBasic News

Dear colleagues,

The use of organic acids and essential oils in animal nutrition has aroused great interest due to their potential to improve animal health and performance.

Organic acids

Organic acids, such as formic acid, acetic acid, and propionic acid, are commonly used as feed additives in animal nutrition. They are known for their antimicrobial properties, which are mainly attributed to their ability to penetrate the cell wall of bacteria and alter their internal pH balance. This alteration inhibits bacterial growth and can lead to bacterial death.

Essential oils

Essential oils are aromatic compounds extracted from plants. They contain numerous bioactive compounds, such as phenols and terpenes, which have been shown to possess antimicrobial properties. These compounds can disrupt the cell membrane of bacteria, leading to leakage of cellular contents and ultimately cell death.

Synergistic mechanism

When used in combination, organic acids and essential oils can show a synergistic effect against bacteria. Organic acids can enhance the antimicrobial activity of essential oils by increasing their solubility and availability in the gastrointestinal tract. This allows more effective penetration of essential oils into the bacterial cell, enhancing their antimicrobial effect.

In addition, organic acids can lower the pH of the gastrointestinal environment, making it more conducive to the action of essential oils. A lower pH can increase the permeability of the bacterial cell wall, making it more susceptible to the action of essential oils.

NBG EnteroBasic – 3 effects in 1

NBG has developed NBG EnteroBasic, a unique new product that combines the use of short and medium chain organic acids with essential oils. This product is made with NBG Bioboost and NBG Protect enhancing technology that protects the active ingredients and releases them directly into the intestine in order to:

– Improve the control of intestinal pathogenic flora.

– Improve the control of intestinal inflammation.

– Improve the regeneration of the intestinal mucosa.

Conclusion

The combination of organic acids and essential oils in animal feed offers a promising approach to improve animal health and performance.  At NBG we have been able to develop a holistic product to improve the intestinal protection and development.
