Colitis – Brachyspira Hyodysenteriae – NBG EnteroShield

Dear Colleagues,

Brachyspira Hyodysentiae is a spirochete that affects pigs, causing symptoms including colitis with superficial coagulation necrosis, epithelial erosion, and severe inflammation of the mucosa and submucosa.

Curcumin is a natural polyphenol extracted from Curcuma longa that exhibits a number of very interesting activities for alleviating the symptoms caused by colon inflammation. Several very interesting actions of curcumin have been described, such as an anticoagulant effect by significantly prolonging thromboplastin and prothrombin time, a broad bactericidal spectrum, and a potent anti-inflammatory effect. In fact, in humans it is used as an anti-inflammatory to relieve symptoms such as those caused by ulcerative colitis, a disease with some symptoms very similar to swine dysentery.

The mechanisms of curcumin’s anti-inflammatory effect may be due to the suppression of nuclear factor kappa-light chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB), the suppression of interleukin-1 (IL-1) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), as well as the direct neutralization of free radicals that exist in excess in any inflamed tissue.

At NBG, we have developed NBG EnteroShield-BH to try to alleviate the effects of swine dysentery. This product contains, among other ingredients, curcumin enhanced with NBG Protect and NBG Bioboost technology.
