Silymarin and Mycotoxin Binders

Dear colleagues,
Currently, treating mycotoxins in the diet with only a mycotoxin binder often yields inconsistent results.
From our point of view, the supplier of the toxin collector is not responsible… the reason lies in mathematics.
Let me explain: if we consider that a low level of a certain mycotoxin… for example, 25 ppb of OTA is sufficient to cause serious problems in animals, it is clear that a toxin binder with, say, 99% effectiveness in binding OTA is not sufficient to control certain high levels of mycotoxins.
The key to understanding this statement lies in the concept of ppb: 1 ppb means 1 particle per 1,000,000,000 particles… it’s like 1 gram drop in a 1,000-metre Olympic swimming pool!
That is why this week we want to share with you a good alternative to use alone or in combination with mycotoxin binders, which in our opinion is very reliable, works with or without mycotoxins, and also has many other positive effects on metabolism. The alternative we are referring to is NBG HepatoShield, a product made with Silymarin enhanced with our HHH® method.
In a recent trial, now almost complete, NBG HepatoShield has been able to neutralise the negative effects of broiler chicken feed with high levels of DON and FUM and has even improved results compared to a control diet without mycotoxins!
But what is silymarin?
Silymarin is an extract from the seeds of milk thistle (Silybum marianum) that has traditionally been used in human nutrition to protect the liver, the organ that neutralises most mycotoxins and their metabolites.
Silymarin is composed of several flavonolignans such as silybin A and B, which are potent metabolic antioxidants that appear to act efficiently in liver tissue. In addition, it appears to promote DNA and RNA synthesis, contributing to hepatocyte replication and improving the level of antioxidant enzymes and peptides such as glutathione.
Our study has not yet been published, but while we prepare the manuscript, we are pleased to share an article that obtained similar results but with an unpotentiated source of silymarin. The difference between this product and NBG Hepatoshield is that our product is capable of achieving the same effects with a dose at least 10 times lower.
