Effects of omega-3-rich fish oil in the diet of dogs and cats

The inclusion of fish oil rich in the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA has been shown to be an effective treatment for inflammatory disorders in dogs such as atopy and some renal disorders, as well as cardiovascular problems, hyperlipidemia, and osteoarthritis.

One of the mechanisms of action is related to the competitive exclusion of long-chain omega-6 fatty acids by the enzymes COA and LOX, producing cytokines of low inflammatory power.

In addition to the use for the above disorders, significant advances are being made in the role of omega-3s in IBD and cognitive function.
