The gut microbiome of healthy and arthritic dogs

Perro con artritis

Dear colleagues,

This week we have chosen an article that tries to relate the intestinal microbiome and osteoarthritis in dogs, a topic that does not surprise me if we consider that the proinflammatory molecules produced by any chronic inflammation, in this case joint inflammation, could affect the permeability and immune function of a highly sensitive tissue such as the intestinal mucosa thus influencing the type of gut microbiome.

But we cannot forget the reverse pathway, since a chronically inflamed intestine, releasing proinflammatory molecules to the rest of the organism, will surely add an extra challenge to an animal with a previous predisposition to suffer any type of osteoarthritis.

So, it is not surprising that commonly natural products that preserve gut health and reduce its inflammation are likely to help take care of the joints as well.

It is just a theory that has begun to be studied but from my point of view with a lot of sense.

Enjoy the article.
